Little Adventure
We used to live in a community that was filled with rows and
rows of multi storied apartment buildings. My life was filled with the kind of
days we miss only after we grow up and know what the words “stress” and
“headache” actually mean. My life was so simple back then in its entirety. All
I worried about was if I had my favourite for lunch and if some more of it
would still be in the kitchen when I came back from school.
My sister
stayed home and used to watch from the windows while I played out in the streets.
Being just a toddler, she was too little to play with me outside and not so
stable on her legs. Like any kid who
lived in the midst of such a huge community, I had my own posse of friends who
were always there and willing to have adventures of our own. Though I had my
posse, I had a friend, one who was closer than the others. She had a bunch of
siblings and the youngest one was around five years old at the time.
One day, on
a weekend, we all gathered bright and early to begin one of our well loved pastimes
– hide and seek. I don’t remember exactly whom, but one was selected to seek
those who hid and began the count down from hundred. We were all scattered in
every possible direction hoping to find the “best” place where no one would be
able to find us, but at the same time would allow us to spy on everyone else. Usually
a game like this would take us a better part of the morning to seek every
single one of those who were hiding. And just like every other game it was all
over by the time lunch time came around. We disbursed to our respective houses
and had plans to meet that evening for something similar.
After coming
home and having lunch I had just settled to watch T.V that afternoon. And
suddenly there was my friend at the doorway calling my name and crying. Not
having seen her cry before I asked her what was wrong and started to panic.
Once she was able to speak, she told me that her youngest brother was missing
and that everyone was searching for him. We had assumed, while playing, that
her brother had gone to hide with her other siblings. At the same time, they
had assumed vice versa and told everyone that he was with us. All of a sudden,
we were the ones who lost him and had no idea where he actually was.
The
situation escalated quickly and so we along with the rest of the adults
searched all the places that we could think of.
My friend and I again went back to the place where we usually hide, the
corner of the balcony of an unoccupied house. And guess what we found there?
The missing culprit was sleeping peacefully; we woke him up and asked him why
he was here. He casually shrugged and said that his house was too noisy and
thought he could take a nap here. While
we all were relieved and stunned at the same time, no one had the heart to
chastise the poor kid who just wanted to sleep.
Listen to
this song if possible (Lost Boy – Ruth B) :
